Communication Process
The Communication Process Workshop focuses on rhetorical concepts that transcend writing and speaking. In other words, whether addressing an audience with a presentation or paper requires the communicator to consider how the document or presentation is structured. Below is a description of the workshop from our website:
Whether beginning an article for publication or preparing for a conference presentation, both activities share a common rhetorical process. This workshop provides a framework to guide you through the process of writing and speaking in an academic context. Emphasis on the similarities and differences between written and oral communication will be explored.
Those of you familiar with rhetorical theory will soon recognize that the workshop is based on the classical canons of rhetoric, which I categorize in the following fashion.
- Plan
- Purpose – determine your purpose for writing or speaking
- Audience – consider the audience you will be addressing
- Prepare
- Invention – substance, content
- Arrangement – structure, organization
- Style – language
- Present
- Delivery – medium of communication
- Visual Support
The Communication Process Workshop is one of the core workshops for the Graduate Communication Certificate Program; however, you do not need to be enrolled in the program to attend the workshop. The workshop is open to all Georgia Tech graduate students and postdocs. Georgia Tech’s newspaper, The Technique, just ran an article about the program and, if interested, you can enroll at the program’s website hosted by the Georgia Tech Library.
